What Right Do You Have to Your DNA?
In another pivotal ruling the US supreme court determined on June 3rd, 2013 that merely being arrested gives the police the right to a DNA sample. These samples may be stored and sequenced and made available in a national database. The implications are far reaching.
Can DNA be Patented?
A recent US Supreme court ruling on June 13th, 2013 has answered this question. Naturally occurring DNA cannot be patented! This invalidates years of exclusivity claimed by Myriad Pharmaceuticals to the right to genetically test for BRC (pronounced BRACK) mutations, mainly implicated in the risk for breast cancer. The ruling makes a clear path for doctors to genetically test their patients in the hope of achieving the dream of pharmacogenetics, or individualized medicine.
