Moodle is a ubiquitous and freely accessible learning management system that has a number of benefits. I utilized it to create a discussion forum on the topic of social constructivism in e-learning. Indeed, the ability to utilize discussion as a collaborative learning tool online is a main advantage of Moodle.
Stephen Downes, one of the co-founders of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) idea describes learning as a form of connectivism:
“At its heart, connectivism is the thesis that knowledge is distributed across a network of connections, and therefore that learning consists of the ability to construct and traverse those networks.”
Online discussion forums are a place to enact this form of social constructivist learning theory and build a location for knowledge generation instead of just acquisition.
